How to find a screenshot you took weeks ago

10 August 2026

You know you captured it. You do not know what you called it or where it went. Here is how to find it.

First: where Windows actually put it

Three different keys do three different things, which is most of why screenshots go missing:

Open Pictures\Screenshots in File Explorer and sort by Date modified. If you roughly remember when, that alone usually finds it.

Narrowing it down in File Explorer

The search box takes filters. datemodified:last week or datemodified:‎7/‎1/‎2026 .. ‎7/‎15/‎2026 cuts a folder of hundreds down to a handful, and kind:picture drops everything else. Switch the view to Extra large icons so you can scan them by eye.

What none of that can do

File Explorer searches file names and dates. It cannot search the words inside the picture. Screenshots are named Screenshot 2026-07-14 113052.png, which tells you when you took it and nothing about what it was — so if all you remember is "it had the error code in it", the built-in search cannot help.

What Clarus adds

Clarus reads the text inside every capture and lets you search it. Type an error message, a person's name, a URL you half remember, and History shows the captures containing it.

That reading happens entirely on your machine. No image is uploaded to be read, and it works with no account and no internet.

History also filters by type — screenshot, recording, scrolling capture — and keeps favourites, for the handful you come back to.

The honest limits

Text recognition is not magic. A capture of a photograph, a game, or a mostly blank window has nothing to read, and roughly a third of a real library turns out to have no usefully readable text in it. That is expected rather than a fault.

Matching also ignores punctuation, which is deliberate: recognition sometimes invents a space, so searching cargo.exe has to match text stored as cargo. exe. It means searches are forgiving, not exact.

Which to choose

If you know roughly when you took it, File Explorer sorted by date is free and fast. Clarus is worth it when all you remember is what the picture said.
